August 24th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Current Issues, Opinions

After almost 2 weeks of sporting excitement and record breaking moments, the 2008 Olympic Games has come to a close.

Quite an impressive Games I must say.

At the time of publication, China leads with a total of 51 Gold medals, obviously surpassing United States’ tally of 36, although in terms of total medal count, US is the first on the scoreboard with 110.

It seems like China’s initiative to boost their Olympics ranking has been fruitful given the sweeping performance of the Chinese athletics. Their total gold medal count has widely surpassed expectations.

Miscalculated.

One word which sums up the military offensive launched by Georgia against South Ossetia.

No one could have expected the escalation of crisis following the Georgian military campaign.

In the late night of 7th August, the Georgian army launched an offensive against South Ossetia citing it as a military response against attacks by South Ossetian separatists.

By 8th August, it became clear that Russia has involved itself in the conflict on grounds of aggressive actions by the Georgians. The crisis quickly escalated into extensive war campaigns which saw the Russian military moving into Georgia in the following days. Large scale battles continued in the conflict zone while the international committee attempts to salvage the situation and halt further military aggression in view of a possible full scale war. Foreigners were swiftly evacuated by emergency agencies.

Randy Pausch (23 Oct 1960 - 25 July 2008)

~Summer 2006~

It first came with unexplained pain in his upper abdomen. Jaundice set in subsequently. Hepatitis? No. Randy Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After enduring an ‘extremely toxic regimen of chemotherapy and radiation’, having tumours, his gallbladder, a third of his pancreas, a third of his stomach and several feet of small intestine removed, Randy Pausch thought he had beaten Pancreatic Cancer. Randy’s doctors gave the all clear sign, after all CT scans signaled that the cancer had disappeared, but it was not to be.

~August 2007~

Imagine waking up to the possibility of having only 12 months to live…sitting in the grim hospital examining room, that was what Randy Pausch and his wife Jai experienced. Flashing on the screen were CT scans of Randy’s liver…and the tumours in them. 10 in total. 10! The initial pancreatic cancer had metastasized into his liver. More »
