The Last Post of 2008

December 31st, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Current Issues, Opinions

As the world counts down to the last few seconds of 2008, it is not suprising that many have hoped for the better in the coming year.

Yet this hope seems far for the people of Israel and Palestine as a war currently ravages their lands.

2008 has been an eventful year indeed. With little doubt, making it to the top of the news have been the financial crisis.

The financial storm which swept across across the globe has definitely disrupted the lives of billions of people. The poor foundation and management of financial institutions and the failure of regulators has saw an unprecedented fall out of top economies. The full effects of the financial tsunami is believed to have not shown its ugly face, and is expected to manifest itself in 2009.

Thailand’s political situation has its share of the news headlines. The world witnessed the drama which unfolded in Bangkok, and has saw the short-lived terms of their prime ministers. How long will the current one last?

Beijing basked in full glory of the world for their stunning show for the 2008 Olympics. Yet not before having gones through the pains of the Sichuan Earthquake and its tainted milk scandal which has left the world mortified.

Last but not least, the United States has witnessed change. Relatively new in politics as compared to other candidates, Barack Obama has overcome all odds to achieve the huge believe and support from the people of America.

As a new dawn embraces America, hopes are high for president-elect Obama to resolve the mess which has crippled the global economy.

WIll 2009 be a better year for everyone?

I do sincerely wish so.

Global Financial Crisis 2008: A Quick Review

October 24th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Current Issues, Opinions

For the past one month, we lived in a period of great financial turmoil in recent history. Unfortunately, the torrent of bad news is not expected to end yet.

With the dust from the subprime mortgage crisis still unsettled, not all is known about the severity of the current financial fallout. With banks announcing further (and even further) write offs, and global liquidity on freeze, the end to the crisis is definitely not in sight.

October 6th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Opinions

Filmed entirely in New Zealand, the fourth and final episode of Sense of Home focuses on the trial and tribulations that Edmund Chen, Andrea De Cruz and their daughter face. After impressing during his overseas job stint, Edmund gets offered an extension to his job and readily accepts. This without first telling his wife, Andrea De Cruz, and his daughter. he eventually breaks the news to them but to his dismay, they disapprove.

During a road trip, Edmund and co. endure a couple more shouting matches, as well a near death experience. To their dismay, their car dies. Luckily for them, a good New Zealand samaritan (married to a Singaporean but unknownst to them at that time) turns up and offers a helping hand. They eventually make it out unschathed but still divided in their opinions of the future.

Eventually Andrea and daugther decide to return to Singapore with Edmund returning after 6 months.

Sense of Home review part 1, 2 & 3

October 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Opinions
Sense of Home

OK well I’ve been tied up. Here goes my part 1, 2, 3 review of Sense of Home.

Quite disappointingly, Sense of Home is just a 4 part series. Only 4 parts? Does the government really think that a 4 part serial will entice overseas Singaporeans to return to Singapore…haha. Wishful thinking man.

A quick refresher for those of you out there who missed the episodes.

Part 1: Fiona Xie & Alaric Tay star as expats living in Shanghai. Fiona is a Shanghai based marketing manager while Alaric is an english teacher. After a passionate night, Fiona finds herself pregnant and faced with the dilemma of whether she should have her Baby in Shanghai or return to Singapore. As the episode goes on, Fiona’s mum flies from Singapore to Shanghai just to check on her. The typical ‘I love you but I hate my mother-in-law’ scenes play out between Alaric and Fiona’s mum. Eventually, mother and son-in-law kiss and make up. Everyone is happy and they return to Singapore to have the baby. Fairytale ending.

China Food Scare: Tainted Milk & More

September 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Current Issues, Opinions

While US mulls over its financial crisis, China is struggling to salvage their reputation as the their recent food scandal shocks the international community.

As you may have know by now, powdered milk were found laced with melamine, a type of industrial compound which is particularly harmful to infants and small children. Till now, four infants have died among some 53,000 ill.

This is not the first time that products from China were found to be unsafe. However, this time, the situation is particularly serious due to widespread contamination and health threat. This is because milk powder is a primary ingredient for many products. As such, many by-products made partly from milk-related ingredients sourced from China have been contaminated in the process. In addition, powdered milk has grown to become a necessity for non-breastfeeding mothers.

AIG, Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers

September 20th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Current Issues, Insights, Opinions

Within the past week, the world witnessed shocking drama on Wall Street.

Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, aged 150.

Merrill Lynch sold itself to Bank of America at the age of 94.

As both events occurred on Monday, AIG seemed near to collapse under financial pressure.

No one must have envisaged one day that these banking giants would fail and one of the world’s largest insurance corporation on the verge of bankruptcy. Not until the collapse of Bear Stearns. Banks worldwide have suffered more than $500 billion of write-downs and loan losses since the global credit crisis began more than a year ago.

Bangkok Dangerous, really

September 7th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Current Issues, Opinions

Bangkok Dangerous - The real stuff, not the movie

We saw over the past recent weeks the dramatic turn of events which unfolded in Thailand.

Anti-government protesters descended in front of the government house and blockaded several major airports, leaving foreigners stranded in the country as airports shut down their operations.

At one point, clashes broke out between them and pro-government activists. The violent clash between the opposing parties resulted in one death and prompted the Thailand Prime Minister, Samak Sundaravej to impose a state of emergency.
