Beijing Olympics Comes to a Close

After almost 2 weeks of sporting excitement and record breaking moments, the 2008 Olympic Games has come to a close.

Quite an impressive Games I must say.

At the time of publication, China leads with a total of 51 Gold medals, obviously surpassing United States’ tally of 36, although in terms of total medal count, US is the first on the scoreboard with 110.

It seems like China’s initiative to boost their Olympics ranking has been fruitful given the sweeping performance of the Chinese athletics. Their total gold medal count has widely surpassed expectations.

From social unrest in Tibet to the disastrous earthquake in Sichuan, China has weathered through several obstacles to the final countdown of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Throughout the past few months, China has gained substantial international media coverage. Along with such publicity came heavy criticisms of the Beijing Government, ranging from issues of Tibet suppression, human rights violation, Darfur genocide, air pollution, and strict media censorship, especially with regards to the internet.
